The writer declares that God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds, this Son being the brightness of His glory, and the express “image,” “charakter” in Greek, of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power.
The writer describes how this Son, having by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high, being made so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they, asking to which of the angels God ever said, “Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee,” or again, “I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son.”
The writer describes angels as worshiping Him, and being made spirits and a flame of fire, but to the Son God says, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever,” describing His unchanging eternity even as the heavens shall perish, while He remains the same, His years not failing, asking to which of the angels God ever said to sit at His right hand until His enemies are made His footstool, concluding that angels are all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation, establishing from the very outset Christ’s supreme, unmatched superiority over even the angels themselves.
This opening chapter’s sweeping declaration, that God has now spoken finally and completely through His Son rather than merely through prophets, establishes the letter’s central argument that Christ represents the climactic, ultimate revelation surpassing everything that came before. Its careful demonstration of the Son’s superiority even over angels sets up the entire letter’s recurring pattern, showing Christ’s supremacy over every rival system, figure, or covenant Israel had previously known.
