Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, writes together with Timothy to Philemon, their dearly beloved friend and fellow laborer, along with Apphia, Archippus, and the church in Philemon’s house, thanking God always and making mention of him in his prayers, having heard of his love and “faith,” “pistis” in Greek, which he has toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, praying that the communication of his faith would become effectual by acknowledging every good thing in him toward Christ Jesus, since Paul has great joy and consolation in his love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by him. Paul explains that though he might be bold in Christ to command Philemon what is fitting, he instead appeals to him for love’s sake, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ, pleading for his own son Onesimus, whom he has begotten in his bonds, who in time past was unprofitable to Philemon, but now is profitable both to Paul and to him, sending him again, though this is like sending his own very heart. Paul explains he would have kept Onesimus with him, that in Philemon’s place he might have ministered to Paul in the bonds of the gospel, but would do nothing without Philemon’s mind, so that his benefit would not be as it were of necessity, but willingly, suggesting that perhaps Onesimus departed for a season for this very reason, that Philemon should receive him forever, not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, especially to Paul, but how much more to Philemon, both in the flesh and in the Lord. Paul asks that if he counts him as a partner, he would receive Onesimus as he would receive Paul himself, offering to repay anything Onesimus owes or has wronged, though gently reminding Philemon that he owes Paul even his own self besides. Paul closes expressing confidence in Philemon’s obedience, knowing he will do even more than what Paul says, asking him also to prepare a lodging, since he trusts through their prayers he will be given to them, closing with warm personal greetings from his fellow laborers and his familiar benediction of grace.
Paul’s gentle, persuasive appeal on behalf of Onesimus, choosing loving request over apostolic command even though he had the authority to demand it, models a beautiful pattern for how genuine relationships handle difficult requests. This brief, deeply personal letter demonstrates the gospel’s power to transform social relationships entirely, turning a runaway slave into a beloved brother welcomed back not with punishment but with genuine, costly forgiveness.
