Paul instructs Titus to remind believers to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready for every good work, speaking evil of no one, being not quarrelsome but gentle, showing all meekness to everyone, since believers themselves were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, and living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.
Paul explains that when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, He saved believers, not by works of righteousness which they had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of “regeneration,” “paliggenesia” in Greek, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which He shed on believers abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace, they should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Paul affirms this a faithful saying, wanting Titus to constantly affirm these things, so that those who have believed in God would be careful to maintain good works, since these things are good and profitable unto men, while foolish questions, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law should be avoided, since they are unprofitable and vain. Paul instructs that a divisive man, after the first and second admonition, should be rejected, knowing such a person is subverted and sins, being self-condemned. He closes with practical travel instructions regarding Artemas, Tychicus, Zenas, and Apollos, urging believers to learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they not be unfruitful, and closes with his familiar benediction of grace.
Paul’s clear statement that believers are saved not by works of righteousness but according to God’s mercy, yet should still carefully maintain good works afterward, captures the gospel’s essential balance perfectly, grace as the foundation, good works as the natural, grateful response rather than the basis for salvation. This closing letter’s brief practical instructions remind readers that sound doctrine always finds its ultimate purpose in transformed, practical daily living.
