Paul instructs Titus to speak the things which become sound “doctrine,” “didaskalia” in Greek, addressing different groups within the church specifically, that older men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, love, and patience, older women likewise to be reverent in behavior, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things, so they may teach younger women to be sober, to love their husbands and children, discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their husbands, that God’s word not be blasphemed.
Paul instructs younger men likewise to be sober minded, and Titus himself to be a pattern of good works, showing uncorruptness, gravity, and sincerity, sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that anyone opposing them would be ashamed, having no evil thing to say. He instructs servants to be obedient to their own masters, pleasing them well in all things, not answering back, not stealing, but showing all good fidelity, so they may adorn the doctrine of God their Savior in all things.
Paul explains that the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching believers that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, they should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, looking for the blessed hope, the glorious appearing of the great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for believers, to redeem them from all iniquity, and purify a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Paul closes urging Titus to speak, exhort, and rebuke with all authority, letting no one despise him.
Paul’s practical instructions addressing older men, older women, younger women, younger men, and servants each specifically show that genuine godliness looks somewhat different depending on one’s stage of life and role, yet flows from the same underlying grace. His central declaration, that grace teaches believers to live soberly and righteously while awaiting Christ’s return, links doctrine and daily conduct together as inseparable parts of the same gospel.
