Paul, a servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, writes according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledging of the truth which leads to godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before the world began, and has now manifested His word through preaching committed to Paul by God’s commandment. He writes to Titus, his own son after the common “faith,” “pistis” in Greek, explaining he left him in Crete to set in order the things lacking, and to ordain elders in every city as Paul had appointed him.
Paul lists qualifications for elders nearly identical to those given Timothy, blameless, husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly, since a bishop must be blameless as a steward of God, not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre, but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate, holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
Paul warns of many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things they should not for filthy lucre’s sake, quoting a Cretian prophet who said Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, and slow bellies, a testimony Paul affirms is true, urging Titus to rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. Paul explains that to the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, since their mind and conscience are defiled, professing to know God, but in works denying Him, being abominable, disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Paul’s charge to Titus, setting churches in order and appointing qualified elders, shows that healthy, lasting ministry requires deliberate structure and careful leadership selection, not just enthusiastic preaching alone. His blunt willingness to address Crete’s cultural reputation directly, rather than politely ignoring it, models honest, unflinching pastoral assessment aimed at genuine correction rather than diplomatic avoidance.
