Paul charges Timothy before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and kingdom, to preach the word, be instant in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine, since a time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own lusts heap up teachers to themselves, having “itching,” “knetho” in Greek, ears, turning away from the truth to fables.
Paul urges Timothy to watch in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, and make full proof of his ministry, since Paul is now ready to be offered, and the time of his departure is at hand. He declares, in one of Scripture’s most quoted passages, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Paul asks Timothy to come to him quickly, mentioning that Demas has forsaken him, loving this present world, while Luke alone remains with him, and asks Timothy to bring Mark and the cloke, books, and parchments he left at Troas. He mentions that Alexander the coppersmith did him much harm, and warns Timothy to beware of him, and describes his own first defense when no one stood with him, yet the Lord stood with him and strengthened him, delivering him out of the mouth of the lion, confident the Lord will deliver him from every evil work and preserve him unto His heavenly kingdom. Paul closes with warm personal greetings and his familiar benediction, “The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.”
Paul’s confident declaration, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, stands as one of Scripture’s most moving final testimonies, a life fully spent in faithful service now approaching its close without regret. His honest mention of being forsaken by some yet sustained by the Lord Himself offers real comfort to anyone facing their own difficult, lonely season while still trusting God’s faithful presence.
