Paul warns that in the last days, “perilous,” “chalepos” in Greek, times shall come, describing people who will be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those who are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power, people Timothy is told to turn away from.
Paul describes such people as always learning yet never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, comparing them to Jannes and Jambres, who withstood Moses, but warns their folly will eventually become evident to everyone. Paul reminds Timothy that he has fully known Paul’s doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, persecutions, and afflictions, all the things that happened to him, out of which the Lord delivered him, and observes that all who will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, while evil men and seducers grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Paul urges Timothy to continue in the things he has learned and been assured of, knowing from whom he learned them, and that from a child he has known the holy scriptures, which are able to make him wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Paul declares that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works, one of Scripture’s clearest statements of its own divine origin and complete sufficiency.
Paul’s sobering catalog of last-days corruption reads remarkably relevant across every generation, describing a pattern of self-focused pride that has recurred throughout human history rather than a single specific era. His declaration that all Scripture is God-breathed and sufficient for equipping believers toward every good work remains foundational to understanding the Bible’s own claim about its unique authority and purpose.
