Paul urges Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and to commit what he has heard from Paul among many witnesses to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. He describes three vivid pictures of faithful endurance, a good “soldier,” “stratiotes” in Greek, who endures hardness and does not entangle himself with civilian affairs, an athlete who competes lawfully to be crowned, and a hardworking farmer who is first to partake of the fruits.
Paul urges Timothy to remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, of the seed of David, according to Paul’s own gospel, for which he suffers trouble even to being bound as a criminal, yet the word of God is not bound. He affirms it is a faithful saying, that if believers died with Christ, they shall also live with Him, if they endure, they shall also reign with Him, and even if they deny Him, He remains faithful, since He cannot deny Himself.
Paul urges Timothy to study to show himself approved unto God, a workman who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth, avoiding profane and vain babblings that increase to more ungodliness, warning against Hymenaeus and Philetus, who erred concerning the truth, saying the resurrection has already passed. He urges Timothy that a servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle to everyone, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those who oppose themselves, if God perhaps will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth, and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil.
Paul’s three vivid images, a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer, each capture a different dimension of faithful perseverance, focused discipline, lawful competition, and patient labor before reward. His instruction to be gentle even with those who oppose the truth reminds every teacher that correcting error should always aim toward genuine restoration rather than mere victory in argument.
