God appears to Abram in a vision, telling him not to fear, promising to be his “shield” and “exceeding great reward.” Abram raises an honest concern. He still has no son, so his servant Eliezer stands to inherit everything. God responds by bringing Abram outside and telling him to count the stars, if he is able, promising that his descendants will be just as numerous.
Then comes one of the most important verses in the entire Bible. “And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” The Hebrew word for believed is “aman,” meaning to be firm, to trust fully, the same root behind the word “amen.” Abram’s faith, not his own effort, is what God counts as righteousness.
God then makes a formal covenant with Abram, using an ancient ceremony of animals cut in half. Abram falls into a deep sleep, and God reveals that his descendants will be enslaved for four hundred years before God brings them out with great possessions. A smoking furnace and a burning lamp, representing God’s own presence, pass between the pieces, sealing the covenant on God’s side alone.
Abram was counted righteous simply because he believed God. Not because of what he accomplished, but because of who he trusted. That same principle carries through the whole Bible. Faith in God’s promise has always been the way people are made right with Him.
