Paul instructs servants under the yoke to count their own masters worthy of all honor, so God’s name and doctrine would not be blasphemed, and those with believing masters should serve them even better, since those benefiting from their service are faithful and beloved. Paul warns against anyone teaching differently, not consenting to wholesome words and doctrine according to godliness, describing such a person as proud, knowing nothing, but obsessed with questions and disputes of words, producing envy, strife, and constant friction among people of corrupt minds destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness. Paul explains that godliness with “contentment,” “autarkeia” in Greek, is great gain, since believers brought nothing into this world and can carry nothing out, so having food and clothing, they should be content with that. He warns that those desiring to be rich fall into temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts, which drown people in destruction and perdition, since the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, which some, coveting after, have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Paul charges Timothy, a man of God, to flee these things and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness, fighting the good fight of faith, laying hold on eternal life, to which he was called. He charges Timothy before God, who quickens all things, and before Christ Jesus, to keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ, and instructs those rich in this world not to be highminded or trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, to be rich in good works, ready to distribute and willing to communicate, laying up a good foundation for the time to come. He closes urging Timothy to guard what has been committed to his trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings and oppositions of science falsely so called.
Paul’s warning that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, rather than money itself, correctly identifies the real danger as an inward disposition rather than mere possession. His closing charge to fight the good fight and guard what has been entrusted offers a fitting, urgent conclusion to this deeply personal letter, calling Timothy to persevere faithfully in both doctrine and character until Christ’s return.
