Paul instructs Timothy not to rebuke an older man sharply, but entreat him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with all purity. He explains that widows who are truly widows, without family to support them, should be honored, but if a widow has children or nephews, those relatives should first learn to show godliness at home and repay their parents, since this is good and acceptable before God.
Paul instructs that a real “widow,” “chera” in Greek, left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, while one who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. Paul establishes guidelines for enrolling widows for church support, generally over sixty years old, well reported for good works, having brought up children, lodged strangers, washed the saints’ feet, and relieved the afflicted, while encouraging younger widows to marry, bear children, and manage their households, giving no occasion to the adversary.
Paul instructs that elders who rule well should be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in word and doctrine, since the laborer is worthy of his reward, and warns against receiving an accusation against an elder without two or three witnesses, while those who sin should be rebuked openly, that others also may fear. He charges Timothy solemnly before God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, to observe these instructions without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality, and closes with practical, personal advice, urging Timothy to use a little wine for his stomach’s sake and frequent infirmities.
Paul’s careful, practical instructions about caring for widows show that genuine church ministry involves real, tangible provision for vulnerable people, not merely spiritual encouragement alone. His insistence that family members bear primary responsibility before the church steps in reflects wisdom about sustainable, properly ordered care that honors both family duty and genuine communal compassion.
