Paul asks for prayer, that the word of the Lord would run swiftly and be glorified just as it was among the Thessalonians, and that he and his companions would be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men, since not everyone has faith. He expresses confidence in the Lord regarding the Thessalonians, that they both do and will continue doing what he commands, praying that the Lord would direct their hearts into the love of God and the “patient waiting,” “hupomone” in Greek, for Christ.
Paul commands them, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw from every brother walking disorderly and not according to the tradition they received from him, reminding them how they ought to follow his own example, since he did not behave disorderly among them, nor ate anyone’s bread for free, but worked night and day with labor so as not to be chargeable to anyone, giving himself as a deliberate example to follow.
Paul addresses a specific problem directly, having heard that some among them walk disorderly, working not at all, but instead becoming busybodies, commanding and exhorting such people through the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and eat their own bread. He urges the rest not to grow weary in doing good, and if anyone refuses to obey his written instruction, to note that person and have no company with him, so he might be ashamed, yet not counting him an enemy, but admonishing him as a brother, closing with a prayer that the Lord of peace would give them peace always, and a final greeting written in his own hand as the mark of authenticity in every one of his letters.
Paul’s blunt instruction, if any would not work, neither should he eat, addresses a very practical problem that misplaced expectations about Christ’s imminent return had apparently created among the Thessalonians. Genuine faith, this closing chapter insists, never becomes an excuse for idle irresponsibility, but continues expressing itself through diligent, ordinary daily faithfulness while waiting.
