Paul, Silvanus, and Timotheus write again to the Thessalonians, telling them it is fitting to thank God always for them, since their faith grows exceedingly and their love for one another abounds, so much that Paul himself boasts of them among God’s other churches for their “patience,” “hupomone” in Greek, and faith amid all the persecutions and afflictions they endure.
Paul explains this suffering is a manifest token of God’s righteous judgment, that they would be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which they also suffer, since it is righteous for God to repay affliction to those who trouble them, and to grant rest to those troubled, along with Paul himself, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel.
Paul explains these disobedient ones will be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints and admired in all who believe, since Paul’s testimony among them was believed. Paul closes this chapter praying that God would count them worthy of this calling, fulfilling every desire of goodness and work of faith with power, so that the name of the Lord Jesus Christ would be glorified in them, according to the grace of God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s remarkable reframing of persecution as evidence of God’s righteous judgment, rather than as a sign of abandonment, offers real comfort to believers facing hardship for their faith. Suffering endured faithfully, this chapter suggests, is never wasted, but becomes genuine proof of a coming reversal where present affliction gives way to promised rest.
