1 THESSALONIANS 3 ‐ “Now We Live, If Ye Stand Fast”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Stand fast” it comes from the Greek Word “steko” which means “to stand firm.”

Unable to bear the uncertainty any longer, Paul sends Timothy to check on a church he desperately worries about. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Thessalonians 3.

Unable to endure the uncertainty any longer, Paul sends Timothy from Athens to establish and comfort the Thessalonians concerning their faith, so that no one would be shaken by the afflictions they were facing, since Paul had told them beforehand they would suffer tribulation, exactly as it happened. Paul explains he sent Timothy specifically to know their faith, fearing that the tempter had somehow tempted them and that his labor among them might have been in vain.

Timothy returns with wonderful news of their faith and love, reporting that they always remember Paul kindly and long to see him, just as he longs to see them. Paul declares with genuine relief and joy, “now we live, if ye “stand fast,” “steko” in Greek, “in the Lord,” expressing that he cannot adequately thank God enough for the joy this good report brought him, praying night and day exceedingly to see their face again and perfect whatever remains lacking in their faith.

Paul prays that God Himself, and the Lord Jesus Christ, would direct his way back to them, and that the Lord would make them increase and abound in love toward one another and toward everyone, just as Paul’s own love does toward them. He prays that God would establish their hearts unblameable in holiness before Him at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints, closing this section with genuine anticipation of Christ’s eventual return.

Paul’s declaration, now we live, if ye stand fast, reveals just how deeply his own personal wellbeing had become tied to this young church’s spiritual health. Genuine pastoral love, this chapter shows, isn’t detached concern from a safe distance, but real, vulnerable investment in another community’s faith actually enduring and standing firm.
