Paul, Silvanus, and Timotheus write to the church of the Thessalonians, giving thanks to God always for them, remembering without ceasing their “work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul explains that the gospel came to them not in word only, but in power, in the Holy Ghost, and with much assurance, and that they became followers of Paul and of the Lord, receiving the word in much affliction, yet with joy of the Holy Ghost.
Paul declares remarkably that the Thessalonians themselves have become “ensamples,” “typos” in Greek, meaning patterns or models, to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia, since from them the word of the Lord has sounded out, not only in those regions, but their faith toward God has spread everywhere, so that Paul no longer even needs to speak of it himself.
Paul explains that people everywhere already report how the Thessalonians turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, “even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” This opening chapter sets a warm, encouraging tone for the entire letter, celebrating a young church already living out genuine, contagious faith despite real hardship and affliction.
The Thessalonians became living proof of the gospel’s power simply through how visibly their lives changed, so much that their reputation spread across an entire region without Paul needing to promote it himself. Genuine faith, this chapter shows, has a way of becoming its own testimony, spreading through changed lives rather than mere words alone.
