The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Fullness” it comes from the Greek Word “pleroma” which means “fullness.”
Paul warns against being led astray by impressive-sounding philosophy and empty religious tradition. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Colossians 2.
Paul expresses his great concern for the Colossians, wanting their hearts comforted, being knit together in love, unto all riches of full assurance of understanding, acknowledging the mystery of God, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He warns them not to let anyone deceive them with persuasive, enticing words, urging them to walk in Christ just as they received Him, “rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith.”
Paul warns specifically against being taken captive through philosophy and vain deceit, based on human tradition and the basic principles of the world rather than on Christ, since in Him dwells all the “fulness,” “pleroma” in Greek, of the Godhead bodily, and believers are complete in Him. He explains that in Christ, believers have been circumcised with a circumcision not made by hands, buried with Him in baptism, and raised with Him through faith in God’s working power, having been made alive together with Him, forgiven of all trespasses.
Paul declares that the handwriting of requirements that stood against believers has been blotted out and nailed to the cross, with Christ having triumphed openly over principalities and powers. He warns against letting anyone judge them regarding food, drink, holy days, new moons, or Sabbath days, since these were merely a shadow of things to come, while the substance belongs to Christ. He warns against false humility and worship of angels, and against submitting to arbitrary human commandments and doctrines that have only an appearance of wisdom but no real value against fleshly indulgence.
Paul’s insistence that believers are already complete in Christ directly confronts any suggestion that additional philosophy, ritual, or special knowledge is needed to supplement genuine faith. If all the fullness of God genuinely dwells in Christ, then nothing else can add to what believers already fully possess through simple faith in Him.
