Paul opens with warmth and genuine affection, thanking God every time he remembers the Philippians, always praying for them “with joy,” “chara” in Greek, because of their fellowship in the gospel from the very first day until now, confident that God who began a good work in them will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. He explains it is right for him to feel this way about them, since he holds them in his heart, and they all share together in the grace of his imprisonment and defense of the gospel.
Paul prays that their love would abound more and more in knowledge and discernment, so they may approve what is excellent and remain sincere and without offense until Christ’s return, filled with the fruits of righteousness through Jesus Christ. He explains that his imprisonment has actually helped advance the gospel, since it has become known throughout the whole palace guard that his chains are for Christ, and has emboldened many other believers to speak the word more courageously without fear.
Paul acknowledges that some preach Christ out of envy and strife, hoping to add affliction to his chains, while others preach out of genuine goodwill, but concludes that either way, Christ is proclaimed, and in this he rejoices. He explains that whether he lives or dies, Christ will be magnified in his body, declaring famously, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Though genuinely torn between departing to be with Christ, which is far better, and remaining to continue fruitful ministry, Paul concludes it is more needful for the Philippians’ sake that he remain, urging them to live worthy of the gospel, standing firm together in one spirit, without being frightened by their opponents.
Paul’s remarkable joy, written from an actual prison cell, flows from a perspective that reframed even his imprisonment as genuinely advancing the gospel rather than hindering it. His famous declaration, to live is Christ and to die is gain, shows a life so thoroughly oriented around Christ that neither continued suffering nor death itself could shake his fundamental joy.
