The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Servant” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ebed” which means “servant.”
From a mountaintop, Moses finally sees the land he has waited forty years to reach. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Deuteronomy 34.
Moses climbs Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, and the Lord shows him the entire promised land, from Gilead all the way to Dan, Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, Judah, and as far as the western sea, along with the plain of Jericho, “the city of palm trees,” unto Zoar. God tells Moses plainly, “I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.”
Moses, the servant of the Lord, “ebed” in Hebrew, dies there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, at 120 years old, his eyes not dim and his natural force not diminished even at that great age. God Himself buries Moses in a valley in Moab, though no one knows the exact location of his grave to this very day. Israel weeps for Moses on the plains of Moab for thirty days, until the days of weeping and mourning are ended.
The book closes noting that Joshua, filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him, is now recognized as Israel’s leader, and the people obey him just as they had obeyed Moses, exactly according to the commandment of the Lord given through Moses. Deuteronomy closes with a remarkable tribute. “There arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,” remembered for all the signs and wonders God sent him to perform in Egypt, and for the great terror and mighty power he displayed in the sight of all Israel.
Moses spent his entire life leading a people toward a land he himself would never enter, yet his final act was simply gazing at it from a mountaintop before dying in complete peace, still full of strength even at 120 years old. A life doesn’t need to reach every promise personally fulfilled to still count as a life faithfully, fully lived.
