One language, one city, one prideful plan to reach the heavens. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 11.
The whole earth still shares one language. Instead of spreading out as God commanded, the people settle in the land of Shinar and decide to build a city with a tower “whose top may reach unto heaven,” so they can “make us a name,” and avoid being scattered across the earth.
God comes down to see the city, and observes that “the people is one, and they have all one language,” which will allow them to accomplish anything they set their minds to, regardless of whether it honors Him. So God confuses their language, so they can no longer understand one another. The Hebrew word for this confusion is “balal,” meaning “to mix or confound,” which is where the name Babel comes from. Unable to communicate, the people scatter across the earth, exactly what they had tried to avoid.
The chapter closes with another genealogy, tracing the line from Shem down through Terah, the father of a man named Abram.
It is worth noticing what the people actually feared. They were not afraid of scattering itself so much as losing control and significance, wanting to “make us a name” through their own effort and unity. God’s response was not cruelty. Scattering the nations across the earth was, in fact, part of His original design from the beginning, given all the way back in Genesis 1, to fill the earth. Babel simply forced people to do by judgment what they refused to do by obedience.
Babel shows what happens when people chase their own glory instead of God’s purposes. What they feared most, being scattered, happened anyway. But even here, God is quietly at work, tracing a bloodline toward the one family He will use to bless the entire scattered world.
