One family becomes an entire world map. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 10.
Genesis 10 is often called the Table of Nations. It traces the descendants of Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, as their families grow into the nations that will fill the earth. The Hebrew word for these peoples is “goyim,” a term used throughout the Bible for the nations of the world.
Japheth’s descendants spread into the coastlands and distant regions. Ham’s line includes Cush, Egypt, and Canaan, and one especially notable figure, Nimrod, described as “a mighty hunter before the LORD,” who builds a kingdom that includes Babel. Shem’s descendants will eventually lead to Abram, the man God is about to call.
The chapter closes with a summary. “These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.”
Among all these names, one deserves a second look. Nimrod is described as beginning “to be a mighty one in the earth,” and his kingdom includes Babel, Erech, and Accad in the land of Shinar, the very region where the next chapter’s tower will rise. Even in a chapter that reads like a list, the text is quietly setting the stage for the story that follows.
This long list of names is easy to skim past, but it shows something important. Every nation on earth traces back to one family that God preserved through the flood. No people group is outside the reach of God’s story or His attention.
