Moses pleads with Israel to listen to the statutes and judgments he teaches them, so that they may live and go in to possess the land. He gives a striking instruction. “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it.” The Hebrew word for these statutes is “choq,” meaning a prescribed limit or decree. He reminds them of what they personally witnessed at Baalpeor, where those who followed after Baal were destroyed, while those who remained faithful to the Lord are all alive today.
Moses reminds Israel vividly of the day they stood at Horeb, hearing God’s voice out of the fire but seeing no form or shape, and warns them urgently against corrupting themselves by making any graven image, since God specifically revealed Himself without visible form precisely to prevent this kind of idolatry. He warns that if they turn to idolatry after entering the land, God will scatter them among the nations, though even there, if they seek Him with all their heart, they will find Him, “for the LORD thy God is a merciful God.”
Moses asks a series of powerful rhetorical questions, whether any nation has ever heard God speaking directly out of fire as Israel has and lived, or whether any god has ever attempted to take a nation for himself through such great signs and wonders as God did in bringing them out of Egypt. He urges them to know therefore this day, and consider it in their heart, “that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.”
Moses’ warning not to add to or take away from God’s commands reflects a serious respect for God’s word exactly as given, resisting both watering it down and piling extra human requirements onto it. Israel’s unique experience of hearing God speak directly was meant to anchor their faith firmly, not to be casually reshaped by their own preferences.
