God blesses Noah and his sons and repeats the command to “be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” He gives permission to eat meat for the first time, with one restriction, not to eat blood, since “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” God also establishes the foundation for human government, requiring that whoever sheds man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed, because mankind is made in God’s image.
God then establishes a covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature, promising never again to destroy the earth with a flood. The Hebrew word for this covenant is “beriyth,” a binding, formal agreement. As the sign of this promise, God sets His rainbow in the clouds.
The chapter ends on a sadder note. Noah plants a vineyard, becomes drunk, and lies uncovered in his tent. His son Ham sees his nakedness and tells his brothers, but Shem and Japheth cover their father respectfully without looking. When Noah wakes, he pronounces a curse on Canaan, Ham’s son, and blessings on Shem and Japheth.
The rainbow is a covenant sign, a promise attached to something ordinary in the sky that becomes a reminder every time it appears. Even Noah, who walked so closely with God, still failed. God’s covenants were never built on human perfection, but on His own unchanging word.
