The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Fruit” it comes from the Greek Word “karpos” which means “fruit.”
Paul contrasts two ways of living, and gives one of the clearest pictures of genuine spiritual growth in the whole Bible. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Galatians 5.
Paul urges the Galatians to stand fast in the liberty Christ has given them, refusing to be entangled again with the yoke of bondage, warning that if they seek to be justified through circumcision and law-keeping, “Christ is become of no effect unto you,” having fallen from grace. He explains that in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, “but faith which worketh by love,” and urges them to use their freedom not as an opportunity for the flesh, but to serve one another through love, since the entire law is fulfilled in one word, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Paul warns them to walk in the Spirit, so they will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, since flesh and Spirit are in constant opposition to one another. He lists the works of the flesh in vivid detail, adultery, fornication, idolatry, hatred, strife, envy, murder, drunkenness, and similar behavior, warning that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Paul then contrasts this with “the fruit,” “karpos” in Greek, “of the Spirit,” love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, against which there is no law. He explains that those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts, and urges believers who live in the Spirit to also walk in step with the Spirit, avoiding vainglory, provocation, and envy of one another.
Paul’s list of the fruit of the Spirit describes character qualities that grow naturally over time, like actual fruit, rather than achievements forced through willpower or rule-keeping. Genuine spiritual maturity, this chapter shows, looks less like rigid self-discipline and more like the natural, gradual result of walking closely with the Spirit day by day.
