Paul addresses the Galatians directly and sharply, calling them foolish for being bewitched after Christ had been so clearly portrayed before them crucified, asking whether they received the Spirit through the works of the law or by simply hearing and believing. He points to Abraham as the clearest example, “even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness,” insisting that those who have faith are the true children of Abraham, and that the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles through faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand.
Paul explains that everyone relying on the works of the law actually lives under a curse, since the law demands perfect, continual obedience, but Christ has redeemed believers from this curse, becoming a curse for them, so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles through faith. He clarifies that the law, given four hundred and thirty years after God’s covenant promise to Abraham, cannot annul that earlier promise, and was never intended to replace faith as the way of receiving righteousness.
Paul explains the actual purpose of the law, that it was added because of transgressions, until the promised offspring, Christ, would come, serving as a “schoolmaster,” “paidagogos” in Greek, describing a guardian who supervised and disciplined children until they reached maturity, bringing people to Christ so they might be justified by faith. Once faith has come, believers are no longer under this tutor, since through faith they are all children of God in Christ Jesus, and “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Paul closes explaining that if they belong to Christ, they are Abraham’s true offspring and heirs according to the promise.
Paul’s image of the law as a schoolmaster, a temporary guardian meant to lead people toward Christ rather than replace Him, reframes the entire relationship between law and grace. Once someone comes to genuine faith, that guardian’s job is complete, since the promised inheritance was always meant to come through faith, not through continued dependence on rule-keeping.
