2 CORINTHIANS 3 ‐ “The Veil Is Taken Away”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Glory” it comes from the Greek Word “doxa” which means “glory, splendor.”

Paul explains why the glory believers now carry is even greater than what shone on Moses’ own face. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Corinthians 3.

Paul explains he needs no letters of recommendation, since the Corinthians themselves are his letter, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on stone tablets but on the tablets of human hearts. He describes himself and his companions as ministers of a new covenant, “not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”

Paul contrasts the glory of the old covenant, engraved on stone, which still carried real glory despite fading, symbolized by Moses veiling his face after speaking with God, with the far greater glory of the new covenant of righteousness through the Spirit. He explains that Israel’s hearts remained veiled whenever the old covenant was read, a veil that is only removed in Christ, “nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.”

Paul declares that “the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,” describing believers as beholding the Lord’s glory with unveiled faces, being transformed progressively “from glory to glory,” “doxa” in Greek, into the very same image, a transformation accomplished by the Spirit of the Lord, not by human effort or careful law-keeping.

The contrast Paul draws between a fading, veiled glory and an ever-increasing, unveiled glory captures something powerful about the difference between law and grace. Believers aren’t simply given a set of rules to follow. They’re progressively transformed from the inside out, reflecting God’s own glory more fully over time through the Spirit’s ongoing work.
