Paul urges the Corinthians to follow after love while also earnestly desiring spiritual gifts, especially prophecy, explaining that someone speaking in an unknown tongue speaks mysteries to God rather than to people, since no one understands them, while prophecy speaks directly to people for their “edification,” “oikodomeo” in Greek, meaning building up, exhortation, and comfort. Paul explains that he would rather speak five understandable words to teach others than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue that no one can comprehend.
Paul compares unintelligible speech to a trumpet giving an uncertain sound, useless for preparing anyone for battle, insisting that words without clear meaning simply speak into the air. He acknowledges his own extensive use of tongues privately, yet insists that in the church he would rather speak five clear words with his understanding than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue, urging them to be mature in their thinking rather than children.
Paul provides clear, practical instructions for orderly worship, that if someone speaks in a tongue, it should be limited to two or three people at most, taking turns, with someone interpreting, or else that person should remain silent in the church, speaking instead to himself and to God. Similarly, prophets should speak two or three at a time, with others judging what is said, and everything should be done “decently and in order,” since “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” Paul instructs that all things be done for edification, closing this section with a summarizing principle for the entire discussion of spiritual gifts throughout the letter.
Paul’s insistence on clarity and order in worship wasn’t about suppressing genuine spiritual gifts, but about making sure they actually accomplished their intended purpose, building up the whole gathered church, not just impressing or confusing bystanders. Even genuine spiritual experience, this chapter shows, still needs thoughtful structure to serve the community well.
