Paul addresses spiritual gifts directly, explaining that while there are diversities of gifts, it is the same Spirit, diversities of ministries but the same Lord, and diversities of operations but the same God working all of them in everyone. He explains that the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good, listing various gifts, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues, all worked by the same Spirit, distributing to each individually exactly as He wills.
Paul develops the image of the human body, “soma” in Greek, to explain how these varied gifts function together, since the body, though one, has many members, all of which, though many, form one body. He addresses potential jealousy or feelings of inferiority, imagining the foot saying it doesn’t belong because it isn’t a hand, insisting that if the whole body were just one part, there would be no body at all, and that God has deliberately arranged the members, each one, in the body exactly as He pleased.
Paul emphasizes that even parts of the body that seem weaker or less honorable are actually necessary and deserve special care and honor, so that there should be no division within the body, but that its members should have equal care for one another, rejoicing and suffering together. He explains that believers collectively “are the body of Christ, and members in particular,” listing various roles God has appointed within the church, apostles, prophets, teachers, and various gifts, before closing with an invitation to earnestly desire the best gifts, promising to show them “a more excellent way” in the chapter that follows.
Paul’s body metaphor dismantles both pride and insecurity within the church at the same time, no gift makes someone more essential, and no gift makes someone unnecessary. Genuine unity, according to this chapter, doesn’t come from everyone having the same role, but from recognizing how differently gifted people are still deeply, mutually dependent on one another.
