As humanity multiplies, wickedness multiplies with it. The Bible describes it plainly. “The wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” God looks at what humanity has become, and “it repented the LORD that he had made man.” The Hebrew word for this grief is “atsab,” meaning to be deeply pained, wounded to the heart. Creation itself has broken God’s heart.
God decides to send a flood to wipe out the corruption, but one man finds grace. “Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.” God gives Noah detailed instructions to build an ark of gopher wood, with specific dimensions, rooms, and a door in the side. God promises to establish His covenant with Noah, and commands him to bring pairs of every living creature into the ark, along with enough food for all of them.
Noah does not argue or delay. “Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”
The chapter also gives specific instructions for the ark itself, three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, thirty cubits high, with three decks and a single door. These are not vague plans. God provides exact measurements for something Noah has never built before and has no reference point for. Noah’s obedience meant trusting details he could not verify in advance, simply because God was the one giving them.
Genesis 6 shows both how deeply sin can grieve God and how one faithful life can still stand out in a corrupt world. Noah’s obedience did not save the whole world, but it did preserve a remnant through whom God’s plan continued.
