Paul confronts believers taking one another to secular courts over disputes, asking incredulously how they dare go before unrighteous judges rather than settling matters among the saints, since believers will one day judge the world and even angels, “how much more things that pertain to this life?” He insists it would be far better to simply accept being wronged or defrauded than to pursue lawsuits, which only shame the church, and warns them not to be deceived, listing various sins, including sexual immorality, idolatry, and theft, that will exclude someone from inheriting the kingdom of God, reminding them plainly, “and such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Paul addresses the principle that while all things may be lawful, not all things are helpful, and he refuses to be brought under the power of anything. He turns specifically to sexual immorality, explaining that the body is not meant for fornication, but for the Lord, and that God will raise up believers’ bodies just as He raised up the Lord Himself, asking pointedly whether they realize their bodies are actually members of Christ.
Paul instructs them to “flee fornication,” “pheugo” in Greek, meaning to flee or escape urgently, explaining that this sin uniquely affects a person’s own body in a way other sins do not, “he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” He reminds them that their body is “the temple of the Holy Ghost,” who dwells within them, a gift received from God, so that they no longer belong to themselves, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Paul’s instruction to flee sexual immorality, rather than simply resist or reason with it, reflects real wisdom about temptation’s power. Some struggles genuinely call for retreat rather than confrontation. And his reminder that believers were bought with a price reframes the body itself, not as something owned privately, but as belonging entirely to God.
