Paul reminds the Corinthians that when he first came to them, he did not come with excellence of speech or human wisdom, but determined to know nothing among them “save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” He came in weakness, fear, and much trembling, and his preaching was not delivered with persuasive words of human wisdom, “but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
Paul explains that he does speak wisdom among the mature, though not the wisdom of this world or its rulers, who are coming to nothing, but “the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom,” ordained before the world began for believers’ glory. He quotes Isaiah, that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, the things God has prepared for those who love Him, but insists God has revealed these things to believers by His Spirit, “for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
Paul compares this to how only a person’s own spirit truly knows the things within them, explaining that believers have received “the spirit which is of God,” enabling them to understand the things freely given to them by God, communicated not in words taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Holy Ghost. He explains that “the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him,” since such things are spiritually discerned, while those who are spiritual can rightly judge all things, having “the mind of Christ.”
Paul deliberately avoided impressive rhetoric specifically so the Corinthians’ faith would rest on God’s power rather than his own persuasive ability. This chapter is a helpful reminder that spiritual truth was never meant to be primarily an intellectual achievement, but something the Holy Spirit alone makes genuinely understandable to a willing heart.
