Paul urges believers, based on everything he has just explained about God’s mercy, to present their bodies “a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service,” and to avoid being conformed to this world, but instead “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,” the Greek word for transformed being “metamorphoo,” so that they can prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. He instructs believers not to think of themselves more highly than they ought, but with sober judgment, since God has distributed to each a measure of faith. Paul describes the church using the image of a body with many members, each having a different function, yet all belonging to one another, encouraging believers to use whatever specific gift they have been given faithfully and generously, whether prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading, or showing mercy. He calls for love without hypocrisy, genuine hatred of evil and clinging to what is good, kindly affectioned toward one another with brotherly love, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, and continuing steadfastly in prayer. Paul instructs believers to bless those who persecute them rather than cursing them, to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep, and to live in harmony with one another, refusing to repay evil for evil, but living peaceably with everyone as much as it depends on them. He closes with a striking instruction about enemies. “If thine enemy hunger, feed him… for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
After building such a comprehensive theological foundation, Paul turns immediately to remarkably practical, everyday instructions, how to treat enemies, how to use spiritual gifts, how to genuinely love without pretense. Real theology, according to this chapter, was never meant to stay abstract. It was always meant to reshape how ordinary life is actually lived.
