Paul anticipates an obvious but troubling question, if grace increases wherever sin increases, should believers simply continue sinning so grace can abound even more? He rejects this immediately. “God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” Paul explains that baptism symbolizes exactly this reality, believers baptized into Christ’s death, buried with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead, they too might walk in newness of life.
Paul explains that the old self was crucified with Christ specifically “that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin,” since a person who has died is freed from sin’s power over them. He calls believers to consider themselves genuinely “dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord,” refusing to let sin reign in their mortal bodies or yielding their members as instruments of unrighteousness, but instead yielding themselves entirely to God as those alive from the dead.
Paul reminds them that sin no longer holds dominion over them, since they are not under law but under grace, though he immediately clarifies this is no license to sin freely, since “his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness.” He describes a decisive change of ownership, once slaves of sin, now become servants of righteousness, leading to genuine holiness. Paul closes with one of Scripture’s most quoted summary statements. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Paul’s answer to why grace doesn’t excuse continued sin comes down to identity, not merely rule-following. Believers aren’t simply forgiven while remaining the same person underneath. They genuinely died to their old way of life and were raised into a completely new one, making continued slavery to sin fundamentally incompatible with who they now actually are.
