Adam and Eve have two sons. Cain works the ground, and Abel keeps flocks. Both bring an offering to the Lord. Abel brings “the firstlings of his flock,” the best he has. Cain brings simply “of the fruit of the ground.” God accepts Abel’s offering but rejects Cain’s. Cain becomes furious, and God warns him directly. “Sin lieth at the door… thou shalt rule over it.” Cain does not listen. He lures Abel into a field and kills him.
When God asks where Abel is, Cain responds with one of the Bible’s most famous lines. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The Hebrew word for keeper is “shamar,” meaning “to watch over and protect.” Cain’s answer is a lie built on indifference. God had already appointed people to watch over one another. Cain is cursed to wander the earth, but God still marks him for protection, so that no one will kill him in revenge.
The chapter closes by tracing Cain’s line, including Lamech, who boasts of his own violence. But it also introduces a third son, Seth, born to replace Abel. “Then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”
Genesis 4 shows how quickly sin escalates once it takes root, from jealousy to murder to boasting about it. But even here, God is not finished. Through Seth, worship of the Lord begins again. God’s plan survives every human failure.
