Paul asks what Abraham, the father of the Jewish people, discovered concerning justification, and answers that if Abraham were justified by works, he would have grounds to boast, “but not before God.” Instead, Paul quotes Genesis directly. “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” The Greek word for counted here is “logizomai,” meaning to reckon or credit to someone’s account, like an accounting term applied to a spiritual reality.
Paul explains that this righteousness was credited to Abraham not as wages earned through work, but as a gift received through faith, comparing it to David’s own description of blessing for the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works, whose sins are forgiven and covered. Paul then makes a striking observation about timing, that Abraham was credited with this righteousness before he was circumcised, not after, making him the spiritual father of all who believe, whether circumcised or not, since faith, not the physical sign, was always what mattered most.
Paul highlights the specific quality of Abraham’s faith, believing God’s promise of a son even though his own body was as good as dead and Sarah’s womb was barren, “being not weak in faith,” and growing strong in faith, giving glory to God, “being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” Paul concludes that this account was written not only for Abraham’s sake, but for readers today as well, that righteousness will likewise be credited to anyone who believes in the God who raised Jesus from the dead.
Paul’s timeline detail, that Abraham was declared righteous before his circumcision, dismantles any assumption that religious ritual or heritage earns God’s favor. Faith alone, demonstrated centuries before the law of Moses even existed, was always what God counted as righteousness, a pattern established at the very root of Israel’s own story.
