Paul warns anyone who judges others while doing the same things themselves, since they condemn themselves in the process, and asks pointedly whether they think they will escape God’s own judgment. He warns against despising “the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering,” not realizing that God’s kindness is meant to lead people toward repentance, and that a hard, unrepentant heart is simply storing up wrath for the day of God’s righteous judgment, when He will render to every person according to their deeds.
Paul insists that God shows no favoritism, “prosopolepsia” in Greek, meaning partiality, since both Jew and Gentile will be judged fairly according to what they actually knew and did, whether under the law or according to the law written on their hearts, their own conscience bearing witness. He challenges Jewish readers specifically who rely on possessing the law and boast in their relationship with God, yet fail to actually keep what the law requires, asking pointedly whether someone who teaches others not to steal, commit adultery, or worship idols might be guilty of the very same things themselves.
Paul redefines what it truly means to belong to God’s covenant people. “He is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter.” True belonging to God, Paul insists, has always been fundamentally a matter of the heart rather than external identity markers alone.
Paul’s warning here targets a subtle danger, feeling secure in religious identity or knowledge while missing genuine, inward transformation. Knowing the right things and even judging others by them means little if that same standard isn’t genuinely lived out. God’s impartial judgment reaches past outward appearance straight to the actual condition of the heart.
