A serpent, “more subtil than any beast of the field,” approaches the woman with a question that twists God’s words. “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” The serpent then flatly contradicts God. “Ye shall not surely die.” Eve sees that the fruit is good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and desirable for wisdom. She eats, and gives some to her husband, who eats as well.
Their eyes are opened immediately, but not to wisdom. They see their own nakedness and feel shame for the first time. They hide from God among the trees. When God confronts them, Adam blames Eve, and Eve blames the serpent. Judgment falls on all three. The serpent is cursed to crawl on its belly. Yet even here, God speaks of hope, promising that the woman’s offspring will one day crush the serpent’s head.
The woman will now have pain in childbirth. The ground itself is cursed because of Adam, so that work becomes hard labor. The Hebrew word for this curse is “arar,” meaning “to bind under a curse.” Adam and Eve are removed from the garden, and a cherubim with a flaming sword guards the way back to the tree of life.
Genesis 3 is the saddest chapter in the Bible, but it is not hopeless. Even while pronouncing judgment, God already promises a rescuer. Every failure after this one gets answered the same way, with God’s grace reaching toward what sin broke.
