Every warning tells Paul not to go to Jerusalem, but he goes anyway. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 21.
Continuing his journey toward Jerusalem, Paul stops in Tyre, where disciples, speaking through the Spirit, warn him repeatedly not to go up to Jerusalem. In Caesarea, the prophet Agabus takes Paul’s belt, binds his own hands and feet with it, and prophesies that the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him to the Gentiles. Despite everyone weeping and begging him not to go, Paul responds, “What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Arriving in Jerusalem, Paul meets with James and the elders, who rejoice at what God has done among the Gentiles through him, but express concern about rumors that Paul teaches Jews to forsake Moses entirely. They suggest Paul join four men under a vow, purifying himself publicly with them at the temple to demonstrate that these rumors are unfounded. Paul agrees and enters the temple accordingly.
When Jews from Asia see Paul in the temple, they stir up the whole crowd, falsely accusing him of bringing Gentiles into the temple’s restricted areas and speaking against the law and this holy place. The furious mob drags Paul out of the temple and attempts to kill him, until word reaches the chief captain of the Roman garrison, who rushes in with soldiers, rescuing Paul from the crowd and binding him with chains. As Paul is being carried up the stairs due to the violence of the crowd, he asks permission to speak to the people, and, remarkably, addresses them in Hebrew, quieting the crowd to hear his defense.
Paul walked knowingly into serious danger, fully aware through multiple prophetic warnings exactly what awaited him, yet he refused to let fear of suffering redirect his commitment to going where he believed God was calling him. Sometimes faithfulness means proceeding anyway, even when every reasonable voice around us urges caution.
