Arriving in Ephesus, Paul finds certain disciples who had only received John’s baptism and know nothing yet of the Holy Ghost. Paul explains John’s baptism pointed toward Jesus, and when they are baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, Paul lays hands on them, and the Holy Ghost comes upon them, and they speak in tongues and prophesy. Paul then preaches boldly in the synagogue for three months, and when opposition arises, moves to the school of Tyrannus, reasoning daily there for two years, so effectively that “all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus.” God works unusual miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that touched him bring healing and deliverance to the sick and demon-possessed. Seven sons of a Jewish chief priest named Sceva attempt to cast out an evil spirit using Jesus’ name as a kind of magic formula, but the evil spirit responds, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?” and the possessed man overpowers all seven, leaving them fleeing naked and wounded. Fear falls on the whole city, and many who had practiced magic bring their expensive books together and burn them publicly, worth fifty thousand pieces of silver, “so mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.” As the gospel spreads, a silversmith named Demetrius, whose business depends on making silver shrines for the goddess Diana, stirs up fellow craftsmen, fearing both financial loss and the temple’s reputation being diminished. A great riot erupts, filling the city with confusion as the crowd drags Paul’s companions into the theater, shouting for nearly two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians.” The city clerk finally calms the crowd, warning that such an unlawful assembly could bring serious consequences from Rome, and dismisses the gathering.
The burning of expensive magic books shows real, costly repentance, believers destroying valuable possessions rather than merely feeling privately convicted. And the riot that followed reveals something honest about the gospel’s impact, when it genuinely threatens someone’s profit or power, real resistance often follows close behind.
