King Herod stretches out his hand to persecute the church, killing James, the brother of John, with the sword, and, seeing that it pleases the Jewish leaders, arrests Peter as well, intending to bring him out for public trial after Passover. Peter is kept in prison under heavy guard, but “prayer,” “proseuche” in Greek, is made without ceasing by the church on his behalf. The very night before his planned trial, an angel of the Lord appears in the prison, strikes Peter to wake him, and his chains fall off his hands.
The angel instructs Peter to dress and follow him, and Peter, thinking he is seeing a vision rather than reality, walks past the guards and through the iron gate, which opens by itself, until they walk down one street and the angel departs. Coming to himself, Peter realizes the Lord has truly delivered him, and goes to the house of Mary, mother of John Mark, where many are gathered praying. When a servant girl named Rhoda recognizes his voice at the gate, she is so overjoyed she forgets to let him in, running instead to tell the others, who initially refuse to believe her.
Peter finally gets them to let him in, describes his miraculous escape, and instructs them to tell James and the brethren before departing to another place. The next morning, there is great commotion among the soldiers over what became of Peter, and Herod, after a thorough search, has the guards executed. The chapter closes describing Herod’s own sudden, dramatic death after accepting worship as a god rather than giving glory to God, struck by an angel and eaten by worms, while the word of God continues to grow and multiply.
The believers prayed earnestly for Peter’s release, yet were still stunned into disbelief when the answer actually arrived at their own door. Sometimes even genuine, persistent prayer can leave us surprised when God actually answers exactly what we asked for, a very human moment tucked inside this dramatic rescue story.
