As the number of disciples multiplies, a dispute arises between Grecian and Hebrew believers, since the Grecian widows are being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. The twelve apostles gather the disciples together, explaining that it is not right for them to neglect preaching God’s word in order to serve tables, and instruct the congregation to select seven men “of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom” to oversee this practical responsibility, so the apostles can focus on prayer and the ministry of the word.
The congregation chooses Stephen, described as “a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost,” the Greek phrase “pleres pisteos” meaning full of faith, along with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, and the apostles pray and lay hands on them, setting them apart for this service. As a direct result, the word of God continues to spread, the number of disciples in Jerusalem multiplies greatly, and even a great company of priests becomes obedient to the faith.
Stephen, full of faith and power, performs great wonders and miracles among the people, but certain men from various synagogues rise up to dispute with him, unable to resist the wisdom and spirit with which he speaks. Unable to defeat him through honest argument, they secretly persuade men to falsely accuse him of blasphemy against Moses and against God, stirring up the people, elders, and scribes, and bringing him before the council with false witnesses claiming he speaks against the temple and the law.
A simple, practical problem, widows being overlooked in food distribution, could easily have been dismissed as beneath the apostles’ attention. Instead, the church took it seriously enough to establish a whole new structure of leadership around it, showing that meeting practical, everyday needs mattered just as much as preaching and prayer.
