Peter and John are arrested for preaching, and their courage in front of the council leaves everyone stunned. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 4.
While Peter and John are still speaking to the people, priests, Sadducees, and the temple captain arrest them, disturbed that they are teaching resurrection through Jesus. They are held overnight, though many who heard the message believe, growing the number of men alone to about five thousand. The next day, brought before the rulers, elders, and scribes, including Annas and Caiaphas, Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, boldly declares that this healing happened by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, “whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,” and that “there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” The council, seeing the boldness, “parrhesia” in Greek, meaning confident, unrestrained speech, of these uneducated, ordinary men, marvels, and recognizes that they had been with Jesus. Unable to deny the obvious miracle standing right before them, healed man included, they can only threaten Peter and John and command them to stop speaking in Jesus’ name altogether. Peter and John respond firmly that they cannot help speaking the things they have seen and heard, leaving the council with no legal grounds to punish them further, given the people’s glorifying response to the miracle. Released, Peter and John return to their own company, and together they lift their voices to God in prayer, not asking for safety, but for continued boldness to speak God’s word while God stretches out His hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Jesus. The place where they are gathered is shaken, and they are all filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking the word of God with boldness. The chapter closes describing the believers’ remarkable unity and generosity, selling possessions and laying the proceeds at the apostles’ feet so that no one among them lacked anything, including Barnabas, who sells a field and brings the money to the apostles.
Facing genuine threats from powerful religious authorities, the early believers didn’t pray for safety or an easier path. They prayed specifically for greater boldness to keep speaking anyway. That kind of courage under real pressure wasn’t natural bravado. It flowed directly from being freshly filled with God’s own Spirit.
