Before there was light, before there was time itself, there was God. Six words into the Bible, and we already know who is in charge. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 1.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The Hebrew word used here for “create” is “bara.” Bara means “to bring something entirely out of nothing.” It is a word used only for God in the Bible. No man can bara. Only God can.
The earth begins “without form, and void,” covered in darkness. Then the Spirit of God moves over the waters, and God speaks. “Let there be light: and there was light.” Over the next six days, God separates and fills. He separates light from darkness, sky from sea, land from water. Then He fills each space. Sun, moon, and stars fill the sky. Fish and birds fill the sea and air. Animals fill the land.
On the sixth day, God makes mankind, “male and female created he them,” in His own image. After each stage of creation, God calls His work good. After mankind, He calls it “very good.”
It is worth noticing the rhythm the chapter repeats. God speaks, and it happens. There is no struggle, no material He has to work with, no resistance to overcome. Each day closes with the same phrase, “the evening and the morning were the” first day, the second day, and so on, a steady, orderly march toward completion. That order matters. The God introduced on page one is not chaotic or reckless. He is deliberate, and everything He makes has a place and a purpose within His design.
Genesis 1 shows a God who creates with order, purpose, and pleasure in what He makes. Nothing about your existence is an accident. You were shaped by the same God who spoke light into the darkness, and He calls His work good.
