On the day of Pentecost, the believers are gathered together when suddenly a sound comes from heaven “as of a rushing mighty wind,” filling the entire house. The Greek word “pneuma” carries this double meaning of spirit, wind, and breath throughout Scripture. Cloven tongues like fire appear and rest on each of them, and they are filled with the Holy Ghost, beginning to speak in other languages as the Spirit gives them utterance. Devout Jews from every nation gathered in Jerusalem are amazed to hear these Galileans speaking in their own native languages, though some mock, assuming they are simply drunk.
Peter stands up with the eleven and addresses the crowd, explaining that this is exactly what the prophet Joel foretold, God pouring out His Spirit on all flesh. He preaches boldly about Jesus of Nazareth, approved by God through miracles, crucified by their own hands, yet raised by God, “whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death.” Peter quotes David’s prophecy about the resurrection and declares plainly, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Cut to the heart, the crowd asks what they should do, and Peter answers, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” About three thousand souls are added that day, and the new believers continue steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer, sharing all things in common, with signs and wonders following, and the Lord adding to the church daily.
The church was born not through careful strategic planning, but through the sudden, overwhelming arrival of God’s own Spirit, immediately producing bold preaching, genuine repentance, and radical generosity among thousands of new believers. This same Spirit remains the actual power behind everything that unfolds through the rest of Acts.
