Jesus goes with His disciples into a garden across the brook Cedron, where Judas, knowing the place well, arrives with a band of soldiers and officers carrying torches and weapons. Jesus, “knowing all things that should come upon him,” steps forward and asks whom they seek. When they answer, “Jesus of Nazareth,” He responds, “I am he,” and remarkably, the whole group falls backward to the ground. When Peter draws a sword and cuts off the ear of the high priest’s servant, Jesus tells him to put it away, asking, “the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?”
Jesus is bound and led first to Annas, father-in-law of the high priest Caiaphas, who questions Him about His disciples and doctrine. Jesus responds that He has spoken openly to the world and has said nothing in secret, and when an officer strikes Him for this answer, Jesus calmly asks him to specify what was wrong with what He said. Meanwhile, Peter, warming himself by a fire in the courtyard, denies knowing Jesus three times, exactly as predicted, and immediately a rooster crows.
Jesus is brought before Pilate, who initially tells the Jewish leaders to judge Him by their own law, but they insist they have no authority to put anyone to death, fulfilling Jesus’ own prediction of how He would die. Pilate questions Jesus privately about His kingship, and Jesus explains that His kingdom is not of this world, “to this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.” Pilate, finding no fault in Him, offers to release Jesus according to a Passover custom, but the crowd demands Barabbas instead.
Jesus’ calm authority throughout His arrest and interrogation stands in sharp contrast to everyone around Him scrambling, denying, or demanding. Even bound and facing false accusations, He remained the one truly in control of the situation, walking deliberately toward exactly what He came to accomplish.
