Jesus warns His disciples of coming persecution, even expulsion from synagogues, so that when it happens they will remember He told them beforehand. He explains that it is actually to their advantage that He goes away, since otherwise the Comforter would not come, but if He departs, He will send the Spirit to them, who will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and will guide them into all truth, speaking only what He hears, and showing them things to come.
Jesus tells them that soon they will not see Him, and then a little while later they will see Him again, referring to His coming death and resurrection, though His disciples remain confused by this cryptic timing. He compares their coming sorrow to a woman in labor, whose anguish turns immediately to joy once her child is born, promising, “ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.”
Jesus promises that in that day, they will ask the Father directly in His name, and receive, “that your joy may be full.” He explains plainly that He came from the Father into the world, and will leave the world again to return to the Father. His disciples finally feel they understand, declaring their belief that He came from God, but Jesus warns them that the hour is coming when they will all be scattered, leaving Him alone, though not truly alone, “because the Father is with me.” He closes with both honesty and hope. “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” The Greek word for overcome here is “nikao.”
Jesus never promised His disciples an easy road, but He consistently paired every warning of hardship with a genuine promise of joy and victory on the other side. His confidence, I have overcome the world, was spoken hours before His crucifixion, proof that His assurance never depended on His circumstances looking good in the moment.
