Jesus comforts His troubled disciples with promises that have brought comfort to grieving hearts ever since. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is John 14.
Jesus tells His disciples, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me,” promising that He goes to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house, and will return to receive them, “that where I am, there ye may be also.” When Thomas asks how they can know the way, Jesus answers with one of His most well-known declarations. “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus responds, “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father,” explaining that He and the Father are so united that His words and works are actually the Father’s own doing. Jesus promises that whoever believes on Him will do even greater works than these, and promises to ask the Father to send “another Comforter,” “parakletos” in Greek, meaning one called alongside to help, advocate, or comfort, “the Spirit of truth,” who will dwell with and within them forever.
Jesus promises He will not leave them as orphans, but will come to them, and that though the world will see Him no more, they will see Him and live because He lives. He explains that the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, will teach them all things and bring to their remembrance everything He has said to them. Jesus leaves them with an extraordinary gift. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Facing His own arrest and crucifixion within hours, Jesus spent this time comforting His disciples rather than dwelling on His own suffering. His promise of peace, unlike anything the world offers, remains one of the most quoted sources of comfort for anyone facing genuine trouble or fear.
