Six days before Passover, Jesus dines at Bethany, where Mary anoints His feet with expensive spikenard ointment and wipes them with her hair, an act of extravagant devotion that Judas Iscariot criticizes as wasteful, though John notes Judas cared more for the money bag he carried than for the poor. Jesus defends her, explaining she has kept this for the day of His burial. The next day, Jesus enters Jerusalem on a young donkey as enormous crowds wave palm branches and cry “Hosanna,” fulfilling Zechariah’s prophecy of a King coming humbly.
Certain Greeks who came to worship at the feast ask to see Jesus, and He responds that “the hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified,” “doxazo” in Greek, comparing His coming death to a grain of wheat that must fall into the ground and die in order to produce much fruit. Troubled in soul, Jesus prays, “Father, glorify thy name,” and a voice from heaven responds audibly, confirming that God has both glorified His name already and will glorify it again.
Despite witnessing so many signs, many still do not believe on Jesus, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy about spiritual blindness, though John notes that even many rulers believed on Him privately, afraid to confess it openly for fear of being put out of the synagogue, “for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” Jesus cries out publicly one final time before His arrest, declaring that He came as light into the world so that whoever believes on Him would not remain in darkness, and that His words, spoken exactly as the Father commanded, are what will judge people at the last day.
Mary’s costly act of devotion and Judas’s calculated criticism sit right next to each other in this chapter, showing two very different responses to being near Jesus. As His hour of glorification through suffering approached, genuine, extravagant love and quiet, self-interested betrayal were both present in the same room.
