Jesus and His disciples encounter a man blind, “typhlos” in Greek, from birth, and when the disciples ask whose sin caused this, Jesus responds that it was neither his sin nor his parents’, “but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” Jesus makes clay from spittle and dirt, anoints the man’s eyes, and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The man obeys and comes back seeing, astonishing his neighbors, who cannot agree whether it is really the same beggar they knew.
Brought before the Pharisees, the healed man explains simply what happened, but the Pharisees are divided, since this healing happened on the Sabbath, some concluding Jesus cannot be from God for breaking it, others wondering how a sinner could perform such signs. Skeptical, they call for the man’s parents, who confirm he was born blind but, afraid of being put out of the synagogue, refuse to speculate on how he was healed, telling the leaders to ask their son directly, since he is of age.
Questioned again, the man responds with simple, unshakable logic. “One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” When pressed further, he asks with some boldness whether they too want to become Jesus’ disciples, and they cast him out angrily. Jesus finds him afterward and reveals Himself as the Son of God, and the man worships Him. Jesus declares that He came into the world for judgment, “that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind,” and when Pharisees nearby ask if they too are blind, Jesus tells them that their claim to already see is exactly what leaves their sin remaining.
The healed man’s simple testimony, I was blind, now I see, needed no theological sophistication to be completely convincing and true. Sometimes the most powerful witness isn’t a complex argument, but a straightforward, honest account of what Jesus has actually done in a person’s own life.
