Scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, testing Him, since the law of Moses commands such a woman be stoned. Jesus stoops down and writes on the ground, then stands and says, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” One by one, beginning with the eldest, her accusers leave, until only Jesus and the woman remain. He tells her that He does not condemn her either, and instructs her to “go, and sin no more.”
Jesus then declares to the crowd, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” The Greek word for light is “phos.” When Pharisees challenge the validity of His testimony about Himself, Jesus points to both His own witness and the Father’s testimony together. He tells them that unless they believe that He is who He claims to be, they will die in their sins, and that the truth, once known, will make them free.
When Jews who claim descent from Abraham object to being called slaves needing freedom, Jesus explains that true freedom comes from the Son, and that their actual spiritual father is the devil, since they seek to kill Him while claiming Abraham as their father, something Abraham himself never did. The confrontation intensifies until Jesus makes an extraordinary claim. “Before Abraham was, I am,” directly invoking God’s own covenant name from the burning bush. Enraged at what they hear as blasphemy, the crowd takes up stones to kill Him, but Jesus hides Himself and leaves the temple.
Jesus’ response to the woman caught in adultery models something powerful, refusing to join in condemnation while also refusing to excuse sin, offering both genuine mercy and a clear call to change. His claim moments later, before Abraham was, I am, reveals exactly why He had the authority to offer that kind of forgiveness in the first place.
