At the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, a man who has been disabled for thirty-eight years lies among a great crowd of sick, blind, and lame people waiting for the water to be stirred. Jesus asks him directly, “Wilt thou be made whole?” The Greek word for whole is “hygies,” meaning healthy or sound. The man explains he has no one to help him into the pool in time. Jesus simply tells him, “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk,” and immediately the man is healed, though it happens to be the Sabbath, provoking immediate criticism from the Jewish leaders.
When they confront the healed man and later Jesus Himself, Jesus responds, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work,” a claim that He is equal with God, intensifying their desire to kill Him. Jesus explains that the Son can do nothing of Himself, only what He sees the Father doing, and that the Father has committed all judgment to the Son, so “that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.”
Jesus declares that whoever hears His word and believes on the Father has passed from death into life, and that a time is coming when the dead will hear His voice and be raised, some to life and some to judgment. He points to multiple witnesses supporting His claims, John’s testimony, His own works, the Father’s testimony, and the Scriptures themselves, yet He rebukes the religious leaders for searching the Scriptures diligently while refusing to come to Him, the very one those Scriptures testify about.
Jesus’ question to the paralyzed man, do you want to be made whole, seems obvious at first, but real healing sometimes requires a person to actually want the change badly enough to act on it. The man didn’t ask for a theological explanation. He simply obeyed, and wholeness followed immediately.
